On Saturday evening, President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the United States has attacked Iran, bombing three nuclear sites in Fordo, Natanz, and Esfahan. Trump’s escalation comes on the heels of unilateral strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities, top military officials, scientists, and civilians by Israel.
The war on Iran, initiated by Netanyahu, and now backed by Trump, is illegal and against the wishes of the American people. We want peace, not war. We want our basic needs –– healthcare, housing, education, and transportation –– met. We want real security and freedom, founded upon collaboration and solidarity with all peoples around the world, not the US war machine.
Make no mistake: joining Israel’s war cannot deliver on any of the American people or international working class’s hopes. This war is the machination of the US ruling class, which seeks to regain its dominance over the world, and has long seen Israel as a guarantor of its interests in the Middle East.
Echoing the US’s justification for invading Iraq, both Israel and the US have framed their actions in the deceptive language of nuclear non-proliferation. But their true ambitions extend much further: crippling Iran as a sovereign regional actor capable of checking American and Israeli power. In the past few days, the American and Israeli political establishments have redoubled their calls for regime change, completely betraying the opportunistic anti-war and anti-interventionist rhetoric Trump adopted on the campaign trail and during his time in the Oval Office.
The world cannot afford any more catastrophes like the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. To stop mass death and destruction, we need a powerful anti-war movement with American civil society, social movements, and labor unions coming together to demand: No war with Iran! End the genocide in Gaza! Uphold peace, democracy, and the rights of working people in every corner of the world!
Thankfully, a response is beginning to take shape. In the coming days, anti-war demonstrations will be held across the country, where Bread and Roses/DSA members will be out in force. We call on our elected officials to support the Massie-Khanna War Powers Resolution to assert Congress’s authority over acts of war and peace. Beyond that, we commit to working for an arms embargo and an end to US military aid to Israel.
